White iPhone 4 nearing release. The white iPhone 4 is almost as mythical (and elusive) as the white unicorn, but it seems this beast (we mean the iPhone, the unicorns are said to be gentle creatures) is set to appear very soon.

The official word from Apple stated that we should expect it in "Spring 2011" in the USA (and the more specific February 2011 in Europe), and the Best Buy internal system shows that the online retailer is anticipating the white iPhone 4 to be in stock as soon as February 27.

To make things even clearer, it's reported that Steve Wozniak (Apple's co-founder) commented that the white iPhone 4 is ready during the Engadget Show, and he expects it to be available to the general public "very soon".

It seems virtually certain that we're going to see the white iPhone 4 in the coming weeks, but are you going to buy one, as the iPhone 5 - whether black or white - is nearing release?

Samsung to sell half of its processors to Apple in 2011

There is nothing better than to benefit from your rivals, and it seems this is exactly what Samsung is thinking, since a report from South Korea says Sammy is to sell half of the processors it is making to Apple- or 20 000 sheets a month.

Take into account this is an unconfirmed report, but if true, it would mean the Korean manufacturer will ship more processors to Apple than to its own mobile division. The unnamed source states:

"Samsung has agreed with Apple to quadruple monthly shipments of its mobile AP chips to 20,000 sheets throughout this year from 5,000 last year."

When it comes to processors, the Galaxy S maker means business, and it's reported that Samsung is building a chip factory worth $3.6 billion in Austin, Texas to boost its production rates.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play prototype gets a thorough review

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play prototype gets a thorough review. There’s not much news as we knew almost everything about the device. The earlier Chinese previews were pretty thorough. The Xperia Play, or the PlayStation phone as it is commonly dubbed, rocks the latest version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on a muscular 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM8655 chipset. And let’s not forget the gorgeous 4” LCD screen relying on a Bravia engine for various imaging and video enhancements.

Few user interface improvements over the stock Android experience have been added here and there. For example, just like on the Xperia Arc, the Xperia Play let’s you pinch anywhere on the homescreen, which will group all the widgets in one screen, clicking on a widgets would take you to its homescreen.

Also, when tested, the prototype’s 5MP snapper at the back of the device only recorded WVGA videos, which corroborates with the earlier previews. We really hope that Sony Ericsson will allow for 720p recording in the final product.

The reviewer tried a couple of unofficially emulated games from the original PlayStation and GameBoy Advance and reportedly everything worked fine - from the performance down to the assigning of the extended hardware gaming controls (except for the touchpads). We bet the experience with the original PSP emulator will be superior.

The reviewer then summoned the expertise of an experienced gamer and he reports that the XPERIA Play is not balanced as well as the PSP Go with the top being heavier than the lower part. Also he found the shoulder buttons being a wee bit thinner than he'd like (the PSP Go is substantially thicker than the XPERIA Play).

The Bold 9780 offers RIM's latest BlackBerry 6 operating system. Personally, I prefer BlackBerry 6 with a touchscreen, like on the Torch 9800, since the menus are much easier to navigate with the swipe of a finger than with the phone's optical trackpad. However, I still prefer the new operating system over the old, and think that alone is worth considering the 9780 over the 9700. BlackBerry 6 has a lot of useful features, and my favorite is the notifications bar that can be pulled down from the top of the screen. Email and messaging is a BlackBerry smartphone's forte and the Bold 9780 wasn't a letdown. Its QWERTY keyboard was the same as the Bold 9700's, and it's excellent for typing long and short messages alike. If you're an email junkie, the Bold 9780 will be right up your alley, although Gmail users will likely prefer the much more robust Gmail client found on an Android smartphone.

The Bold's relatively low screen resolution, paired with its small screen size, made surfing full HTML websites a struggle. It took way too much panning to find the information I wanted, or to read a full story on our homepage. Pages load just fine, but RIM also has yet to add Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support, so most Flash content is unavailable. Pages sometimes lagged a bit while panning, too, despite the Bold 9780's 512MB of memory (up from the 9700's 256MB).

The Bold 9780 offers a 5MP camera instead of the 3.2MP camera on the Bold 9700. It's an improvement, but the images aren't as sharp as those shot with Samsung's Galaxy S phones. I saw a lot of graininess and washed out colors in most shots. I also think it's time RIM starts equipping its phones with the ability to shoot HD video; it's the only major manufacturer with a flagship phone that's unable to do that.

Voice and data on the Bold 9780 were good. I had no issues placing calls on the 9780 and can think of at least two instances where I preferred to place a call on that phone here in NYC, because of its reliability, instead of using my everyday phone, AT&T's Samsung Captivate. As with most of T-Mobile's BlackBerry phones, the Bold 9780 also supports UMA calling, which allows you to place voice calls over a Wi-Fi network should you be out of T-Mobile's coverage area.

Overall the Bold 9780 is a good phone, make no mistake about it, but it's not great. The operating system, despite being new, feels outdated compared to nearly every other OS out there, including Android and Apple's iOS. There aren't a ton of first-rate apps available, either, despite what RIM would have you believe through its commercials. If you're a BlackBerry fan and want to stick with a BlackBerry, then the Bold 9780 is an excellent choice. If you want more out of your smartphone in terms of applications, more robust email clients, and a better web browsing experience, I'd recommend nearly any of T-Mobile's Android phones instead.

Apparently, the Motorola Atrix 4G is no other but the long-rumored Motorola Olympus- a Tegra 2-powered dual-core Android beast, which seems to be dubbed by Moto as "the world's most powerful smartphone"... Ouch. The Olympian of a phone will of course have a giant 4" qHD screen, as well as the whooping 1GB of RAM and a monstrous 1930mAh battery to keep the whole thing alive. Pretty impressive to say the least. So what network will it operate on? AT&T's Ralph De La Vega says that both HSPA+ and LTE should qualify as 4G networks, so which one is it? Well, there's a good and a bad news. Okay, bad news first - it will run on the carrier's current HSPA+ network. The good news? It will be launched in the first half of the year, while AT&T's upcoming LTE devices will see the light of day sometime during the second half. The handset is going to run Android 2.2, customized by the one and only MotoBlur UI.

But that's not all. It seems like Moto is also gearing up to launch a... drum roll, please... laptop dock for the Atrix 4G! Instead of twisting the earpiece to turn it on, we would've preferred seeing it as a separate switch/button – or somehow be combined with the existing call control key built into the leather surface or the dedicated voice command button on its side. Nonetheless, you're going to need to store it else where, like your pockets, if you want to conserve additional battery power because it can't be worn while set to the off position. The Motorola DEFY has the most recent version of the MOTOBLUR UI but the actual OS is only getting older. This phone is still stuck on Éclair while the hungry smartphone crowd has its eyes on more tempting Froyo or even Gingerbread, which is just around the corner. But Motorola are making no promises about getting the DEFY suited up with a Froyo update any time soon.

Anyway, if you choose to wait in the company of a Motorola DEFY, you’re unlikely to get bored or disappointed. It’s tough when it needs to be but not in the sense of aggressive – let alone difficult. It’s a phone that knows its limits too. If you know up front what to expect, it should be a fair deal. After all, the Motorola DEFY isn’t charging a fortune.

The Yendo is the first feature phone to come with the Four corner UI, as seen on the XPERIA X10 mini. While it is offering little new, it’s still nice looking and intuitive. And that is very important when it comes to touch phones. The expected price of around 100 euro is another point in favor. And the Walkman branding makes it all the sweeter.

As for the other features, they’re mostly nice to have but not essential in a package of this kind. Yes, there is a camera on board for example, but with limited functionality and unimpressive image quality.

The touchscreen is on the small size and the resolution is low. On the other hand, the user interface is both thumbable and eye-pleasing so you might not notice the screen’s downsides.

In terms of displays, these two smartphones feature the latest and greatest that have their own unique strengths to instantly wow anyone. Even to this day, there isn't anything else out there in the market that produces better looking colors than Samsung's Super AMOLED panels. In fact, the 4” capacitive touchscreen of the Nexus S hits the perfect sweet spot with its WVGA (480 x 800) resolution and support for 16.7 million colors. Needless to say that its output is stunning as colors magnificently jump out – while still retaining plenty of details. Conversely, the 3.5” Retina Display of the iPhone 4 takes the cake in pixel density since it packs a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. Granted that it's smaller, its high resolution makes even the tiniest of details jump out with sharp corners to make it easy on the eyes to view. But honestly, it's going to take a keen eye to distinguish any difference in detail between the two displays as they both offer great viewing angles and shine brightly.

One of the most frustrating parts about the Google Nexus S has to be its four capacitive buttons beneath the display because they're not all that distinguishable. Even with its back lighting on, it's still extremely weak and makes for some difficulty even in low lighting conditions – not to mention the occasional accidental press. In contrast, the single home button of the iPhone 4 is instantly visible and offers a springy feel when pressed – meaning it's the preferred method between the two.

On the left sides of both phones, we find their decently sized and pronounced volume rockers – a thin looking one with the Nexus S and separated ones with the iPhone 4. And when they're pressed, they do offer a substantial amount of feedback to make sure you hit them. With the iPhone 4, we also find a latch that conveniently places the phone in vibrate/silence mode.

Between the two, we actually prefer the feel and placement of the dedicated power button of the iPhone 4 as it's located on the top edge and is accompanied with a springy feel. Even though it's an improvement over other Samsung Galaxy S devices out there, the power button of the Nexus S isn't as prominent – but luckily manages to offer a decent response when pressed.

And from what one could gather from the few photographs that abound in the internet, the displays looks vivid and bright as well.

According to LG's official site, LG VX9100 will sport the clamshell design with a full QWERTY keyboard and will be slimmer than the enV. But official dimensions are as of yet announced. Aside from its slimmer body, it will also generally be more streamlined, thanks to the absence of the camera lens bulge that has become the bane of camera phone manufacturers.

PROS: Of course one of the best traits of mobile phones of this class is the presence of a fully functional QWERTY keyboard. And judging from the photographs released by LG Electronics, the QWERTY from this new offering looks to have ergonomics written all over it. The projected price is also cheaper than that of the iPhone, considering it will generally have more features and offer more support.

CONS: As the LG VX9100 is yet to be released, its weaknesses are of course still not apparent. Although a camera much higher than the 2.0 mega pixels would go a long way as other supposed iPhone killers will offer more, like the rumored 5.0 mega pixel offering from Samsung's U940.

Overall: With all the features promised, the LG VX9100 Full Review may be what Apple weary consumers need. And that alone may be well worth the wait for many gadget aficionados.

BlackBerry Storm review may seem unfair to open up the review of RIM's latest BlackBerry -- the Storm -- with a history lesson on the iPhone, but if you understand the market which Verizon and RIM hope to capture, then you understand the Storm, and it helps put this critique in perspective. The Storm, a widescreen, touchscreen device boasts many of the same features as the iPhone, but adds innovations like a clickable display, and comes packed with RIM's legendary email and messaging services.

Touchscreen
Unlike similarly stacked competitors (the iPhone and Instinct come to mind) the Storm doesn't just boast a capacitive touch display, it also utilizes a completely unique "click" technology called SurePress which actually allows you to click the screen down like a mouse button. The purpose of this technology, ostensibly, is to provide two aspects to touch screens which are currently lacking in most devices: the ability to "hover" without selecting or moving an on-screen element, and the physical sensation of "clicking" when you type or navigate. All modern BlackBerrys use a QWERTY or SureType keypad coupled with a trackball for navigation, in addition to heavy emphasis on a pop-up menu accessible by the "menu" key from pretty much every section of the OS. There's no inertia to movement, no assurance that your finger is the lynchpin to control of the device. The screen is sensitive enough, surely, but how its software reacts to those touches makes all the difference, and here the feeling is that you're never completely in charge of the phone.
BlackBerrys have garnered an almost mythic stature as the phone for email and messaging. One of the components of RIM's success for that model has been the inclusion of QWERTY keypads (and more recently the halved QWERTY SureType keyboards) on their phones. Otherwise, there are a few great implementations of the screen -- copying and pasting, which is the norm on RIM phones, is fully represented here with elegant multitouch functionality. If speed isn't a concern, you'll probably find it manageable, but for BlackBerry addicts and those accustomed to typing on the iPhone, this will be a disappointment.

Besides the new technology behind the display, the screen itself is fairly tremendous.

Software
Navigating through menus and the home screen is still very much a typical BlackBerry experience though. The phone has two levels of "application" screens, the initial landing screen, which gives you eight app icons of your choosing, and a deeper level which displays all of your folders and programs. On that note, third-party software is still a bit weak for the platform, and essentially non-existent for the Storm itself. It doesn't look like using this phone will break any (or most) of the software already out for BlackBerry devices, but there's also not much taking advantage of the new format and screen real estate. In particular, something like the Facebook application -- which Verizon and RIM are pushing hard with the launch of the Storm -- is a poor stand-in for the iPhone offering, sporting exactly the same functionality it does on an older RIM device. Because the phone is being marketed as a convergence device, it's got an extra emphasis on media functions. Management of media is still pretty standard -- we copied files back and forth between the microSD card (8GB is included with the phone), but there's no flashy Cover Flow or anything.
All in all, the software feature-set the phone ships with is incredibly strong. There's a broad selection of applications, including the "To Go" suite that allow you to view and edit Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents. Average (and even not so average) users will be hard pressed to find something that's missing, and RIM makes it easy enough to grab key software if someone wants it. We were a bit stunned to find out that we couldn't sync the Storm with our Mac out of the box. For the few Mac users that also happen to dig BlackBerrys, there's a piece of software RIM offers free of charge called PocketMac, which does a half decent job of at least throwing your contacts, calendars, and other assorted must-haves onto your device -- but you're out of luck if you buy a Storm.
Thankfully the browser has been considerably updated. If you have any experience with RIM's last attempt at mobile browsers (the Bold), then you know what manna from heaven any fixes would be. 4.6's browser is, in a word, unusable. Pages load quickly and are generally formatted correctly, navigation is much snappier (zooms don't take hours to redraw), and scrolling is tolerable, if not as buttery smooth as we prefer. On the messaging and email front, very little has changed here from earlier RIM phones, save for some of that visual flair. Particularly when it comes to email, the use of screen real estate and selection of fonts seems dated when compared with the iPhone.

Phone / Data

When it comes to sound quality and reception for making actual phone calls, you can't beat this combination. RIM phones generally have loud and clear earpieces and speakerphones, and Verizon -- love it or hate it -- has a great network. Those two facts are certainly apparent when it comes to the Storm. We found the earpiece to be plenty loud, and the speakerphone equally booming. If we had a complaint, we'd say the mid-range was a bit shrill on the phone. The Bold, by comparison, has a much warmer, well-rounded output. Still, that's a pretty minor complaint, and if you're looking for sheer network-clutching goodness, this is a pretty damn good choice. In addition to Verizon's CDMA, EV-DO, Rev. A madness, the Storm sports a GSM radio (a number of them), so you can grab HSPA in the rest of the world, and truck on some sweet, sweet EDGE here in the States.

Speaking of that EV-DO, the download speeds and network stability of the Storm seem pretty tight. Although the phone omits WiFi, as long as you stay inside decent Verizon coverage areas, you won't feel that sting too badly.

Camera / GPS / Battery life

In general, picture quality was excellent on the camera, which offers a healthy 3.2-megapixel resolution. There were numerous times when trying to photograph something that we lost the shot because of the length of time it took the camera to kick in. A lot faster.

Results are mediocre, allowing capture up to 320 x 240, with quite a bit of heavy artifacting. Using the device for navigation garnered excellent results in terms of signal reception and tracking, but having to slug through the abysmal Verizon Navigator software isn't exactly joyous (dudes, that intro animation is the worst thing we've ever seen). It would be nice to see some third party options on the device for PND duties, though at least Verizon tries to throw a lot of content into the mix (movie times, traffic, local search), no matter how heavy handed it feels (real, real heavy handed).

In casual use, however, the Storm seems to be going strong even after a heavy workload: browsing, media player, and phone calls.

Overview
The HTC Desire HD is from the popular HTC Desire range which includes other Smartphone's such as the HTC Desire & the HTC Desire Z. The Desire HD has a touch screen form casing & supports an Android™ 2.2 Froyo operating system complete with a highly usable HTC Sense™ user interface. This gorgeously designed HTC Smartphone support many features including high definition video recording capabilities, 8 megapixel digital camera complete with face detection & a pinch to zoom facility, easy to create messaging services & fun music features. Appearance & Size
Its overall casing size is fairly large but slim due to the super sized 4.3 inch touch screen & it is quite a weighty handset at 164 grams but this added weight gives this Smartphone a quality feel. At 99 x 54 x 15 mm the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 is a compact phone, just not as tiny as the X10 mini. This leaves enough room for a 3” HVGA screen, so that the custom Android UI doesn’t feel cramped.
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 looks like a stretched out X10 mini, which in turn looked like an X10 in miniature. The plastic used on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 doesn’t have a “premium” feel to it. What’s missing in the Android standard assortment of keys is the search key – you get a search widget on the homescreen instead.

Small user interface on a bigger screen
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 runs version 1.6 of the Android platform with Sony Ericsson’s own touches. The XPERIA X8 uses the same homescreen as its smaller sibling, the X10 mini. However this time the screen has HVGA resolution, which is still the most popular screen res on Android, and with its 3 inches, it’s a lot roomier.

The Android OS comes with an excellent WebKit-based browser and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 does not make an exception. Unfortunately, the browser on the X8 mini supports only a single zoom method – the dedicated onscreen buttons. Hit the menu key and four keys pop up – Go button, tabs button, favorites and more options.
Flash 10.1 is available for Android 2.2 Froyo but it’s another matter when the XPERIA X8 will be updated – we’re still waiting for those 2.1 Eclair updates.
However the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8’s competition is already in stores – the Samsung I5800 Galaxy 3, the I5700 Galaxy Spica and the LG GT540 Optimus have similar prices and specs. If the XPERIA X8 was available right now it would probably be selling quite well.

Samsung S8500 Wave:: Bada OS with Samsung Apps

We’re about to see what the Samsung S8500 Wave is really capable of. The S8500 Wave did well in our preview and - fingers crossed - unpleasant surprises are not on today’s menu. The OS is trying to combine feature-phone ease of use with the versatility of smartphones. The S8500 Wave fits the bill. Trademark Samsung exterior and premium build are inviting enough to encourage exploring a wealth of features.

The S8500 Wave tries to give it all and hopes the Samsung app store will eventually catch up. Anyway, there just aren’t enough Bada OS compatible applications yet so there’s little difference (beyond hardware) between the Samsung S8500 Wave and a Samsung S8000 Jet.
You get both HSDPA and HSUPA support, as well as Bluetooth v3.0 and Wi-Fi with WPS and Wi-Fi tethering.

HTC Smart review: First grader

Throwing another mobile OS on the market is hardly the right move since the smartphone arena is already over-crowded. But it seems HTC Smart is HTC’s way of making a feature phone. The Linux-based Brew Mobile platform used for the HTC Smart hardly makes it a proper smartphone to boot. Truth is, there are modern touch feature phones that have more “smart” in them than this one.

But enough about software, let’s see what HTC Smart has to offer in terms of hardware.

Samsung I9000 Galaxy S

Samsung might be coming a tad late to the party but they are obviously entering with a bang. The I9000 Galaxy S packs a display of the greatest technology that the mobile world has ever seen and a pretty big one at that. A snappy 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, HD video recording and a sweetly slim waistline make it look like the real deal in the eyes of every real geek.

As you can see the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S specs sheet is long enough to be considered high-end. What’s even better is that it manages to put something on top, namely the large 4” Super AMOLED display, which should become the new thing to beat if it has the performance of the Samsung S8500 Wave unit.

The TouchWiz-like Android customization still had some performance issues on the Galaxy Spica so we will have to see if those are fixed for the Galaxy S. We are also yet to check out how the new 1GHz Samsung Cortex A8 CPU compares to its Snapdragon peers in the Android environment, but we have a good feeling about it.

At any rate the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is a fine piece of mobile technology and we are as eager as you to see if it will actually manage to top the charts or end up in the chasing pack. So let’s not waste any more time and head to the hardware part of the preview where we’ll examine the Galaxy S ergonomics.

Silicon Valley start-up Skyfire Labs, which is backed by $17.8m in VC cash, has grabbed a lot of column inches with its mobile browser offering - even though it's still only a beta release and only relatively recently a public beta. Like Opera, Skyfire uses proxy servers to offload the loading of web pages for faster surfing, and also makes use of the Gecko rendering engine. Its biggest claim to fame is Flash and Java support - the likes of iPlayer, YouTube et al work as they do on the full-fat internet, embedded in the page. Currently Skyfire only supports Canada, UK and US regions but it's certainly a browser to watch.

Start up time
• microB: instant
• Fennec: About ten seconds (warm start-up is little bit faster, but it is still slooooow….)
This is a pain for Fennec. Loading all that XUL Javascript needed to run Fennec is just too much. You really don’t want to start Fennec for a quick browsing session, unless you have the patience of a cow. I am not sure whether N900 keeps microB loaded on the background all the time or what’s causing the difference.

User interface
This is really where Fennec shines. Nokia enjoys some reputation of being a boring engineer house with little innovation left to stir. After learning the trick of left and right sweep, which is cleverly demostrated on the start page, Fennec user interface instantly feels intuitive. microB, on the other hand, uses somehow clumsy “bottom right corner full-screen button” to access buttons and left-right sweep is not very well thought. For example, switching a tab/browser window takes three “clicks” on microB (show menu – switch application – choose next browser window) when Fennec does it with one sweep and click. Also, backward navigation is much more intuitive on Fennec and takes too many gestures on microB.
Both browsers have search integrated to the navigation bar. Fennec start screen is more clever, showing the history and shortcuts, while microB shows only the bookmarks. Fennec navigation bar also is a combination of title and navigation bar, saving the precious screen estate on small physical form factor. Fennec zooms to text fields automatically when you start to input text into them and also have soft “tab keys” to navigate to next and previous input field.

Page reading and speed
On sites with above average layout complexity, Fennec is unbearable slow compared to microB, up to the point the browser is next to unusable in its current incarnation. As they both use the same rendering engine, I have hard time to understand how microB manages even the heaviest dynamic pages (Facebook profile page) when Fennec becomes unusable even on a moderate complex page (slashdot.org).
The thing with Fennec is that for some of the the time it does not register your interaction and does not have any indicator showing if it is responding – it has grinded to halt, little bit like desktop computer when swapping. And even when Fennec is responding the scrolling of the page refreshment is sluggish compared to microB. This makes the page reading experience unusable. A normal user won’t stand 1-3 second frequent responsivity pauses or page movement which cannot be controlled.
microB must do the rendering somehow different - is it hardware acceleration on font rendering, smarter management of images or some other trick?. However, until Fennec reaches the smoothiness of microB, there is no way I would switch to Fennec over microB.
(Note: You can press CTRL-Backspace from N900 keyboard to force application switch if you cannot exit from halted Fennec otherwise)

Mobile browsing
Though N900 has 800 pixel wide screen, it is still a mobile phone. Small physical size, low bandwidth with high latency and limited CPU power might make you to pick a mobile internet version of the site when it is available. However, since the screen has exceptional high Dots-Per-Inch value, this poses a problem for rendering sites with the default font sizes.
Fennec does not seem to have a shortcut for setting a large text size. This is something one would hope to see on such high DPI device as the most of the time default web site fonts are too small to be usable. Also, Fennec does not use the shoulder plus and minus volume buttons for zooming – microB does it and it is very natural place for this function.
Fennec seems to have some difficulties with mobile site rendering: for example touch.facebook.com and yle.mobi are not scaled to full width. Instead a narrow colum of 1/3 screen width is displayed.

Bugginess
microB is very solid piece of software. It crashes more rarely than Safari on iPhone (might this be because of more memory – low memory conditions seem to be a normal crashing condition for Safari?). Fennec is still in its first version and have some issues.
(Note: I managed to get Fennec to zombie state – I had to go to terminal and type killall fennec command to make the browser become launchable again).

A satellite telephone, satellite phone, or satphone is a type of mobile phone that connects to orbiting satellites instead of terrestrial cell sites. Depending on the architecture of a particular system, coverage may include the entire Earth, or only specific regions.

The mobile equipment, also known as a terminal, varies widely. Early satellite phone handsets had a size and weight comparable to that of a late 1980s or early 1990s mobile phone, but usually with a large retractable antenna. More recent satellite phones are similar in size to a regular mobile phone while some prototype satellite phones have no distinguishable difference from an ordinary smartphone. Satphones are popular on expeditions into remote areas where terrestrial cellular service is unavailable.

A fixed installation, such as used shipboard, may include large, rugged, rack-mounted electronics, and a steerable microwave antenna on the mast that automatically tracks the overhead satellites. Smaller installations using VoIP over a two-way satellite broadband service such as ASTRA2Connect Maritime Broadband bring the costs within the reach of leisure vessel owners. Internet service Satellite phones have notoriously poor reception indoors, though it may be possible to get a consistent signal near a window or in the top floor of a building if the roof is sufficiently thin. The phones have connectors for external antennas that are often installed in vehicles and buildings. Some systems also allow for the use of repeaters, much like terrestrial mobile phone systems.

In some countries ruled by oppressive regimes such as Burma, possession of a satellite phone is illegal. Their signals will usually bypass local telecoms systems, hindering censorship and wiretapping attempts. In Australia, residents of remote areas may apply for a government subsidy for a satellite phone.

Satellite Phone Networks

Geosynchronous services

Some satellite phones use satellites in geosynchronous orbit, which are meant to remain in a fixed position in the sky at all times. These systems can maintain near-continuous global coverage with only three or four satellites, reducing the launch costs. However the satellites used for these systems are very heavy (approx. 5000 kg) and therefore very expensive to build and launch. The satellites sit at an altitude of about 22,000 miles (35,000 km); a noticeable delay is present while making a phone call or using data services due to the large distances from their users. The amount of bandwidth available on these systems is substantially higher than that of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) systems; all three active systems provide portable satellite Internet using laptop-sized terminals with speeds ranging from 60 kbits to 512 kbits per second (Kbps).

Another disadvantage of geostationary satellite systems is that in many areas—even where a large amount of open sky is present—the line-of-sight between the phone and the satellite is broken by obstacles such as steep hills and forest. The user will need to find an area with line-of-sight before being able to use the phone. This is not the case with LEO services: even if the signal is blocked by an obstacle, one can wait a few minutes until another satellite passes overhead.

* ACeS: This small regional operator provides voice and data services in East Asia using a single satellite.
* Inmarsat: The oldest satellite phone operator, founded in 1979. It originally provided large fixed installations intended for use on ships, but has only recently started to enter the market of hand-held phones in a joint venture with ACeS. The company operates eleven satellites with another planned for launch in 2010. Coverage is available on most of the earth's surface, notably excepting polar regions.
* Thuraya: A system based in the UAE. Three satellites are currently in active service that provide coverage to the most of Eurasia, Africa and Australia. There is some degree of coverage overlap between adjacent satellites within the network.
* MSAT / SkyTerra: An American satellite phone company which uses equipment similar to Inmarsat, but plans to launch a service using hand-held devices in the Americas similar to Thuraya's.
* Terrestar: Satellite phone system for North America
* ICO Global Communications: A satellite phone company which has launched a single geosynchronous satellite which is not yet in active service.

Low Earth orbit

LEO telephones utilizes LEO (low Earth orbit) satellite technology. The advantages include providing worldwide wireless coverage with no gaps. LEO satellites orbit the earth in high speed, low altitude orbits with an orbital time of 70–100 minutes, an altitude of 640 to 1120 kilometers (400 to 700 miles), and provide coverage cells of about (at a 100-minute orbital period) 2800km in radius (about 1740mi). Since the satellites are not geosynchronous, they must fly complete orbits. At least one satellite must have line-of-sight to every coverage area at all times to guarantee complete coverage. Depending on the positions of both the satellite and terrestrial user, a usable pass of an individual LEO satellite will typically last 4–15 minutes on average; thus, a constellation of satellites is required to maintain coverage (as is done with Iridium, Global Star, GPS, and others).

Two such systems, both based in the United States started up in the late 1990s but soon went into bankruptcy after they failed to gain the number of subscribers required to fund the large satellite launch costs. They are now operated by new owners who bought the assets for a fraction of their original cost and are now both planning to launch replacement constellations supporting higher bandwidth. Data speeds for current networks are between 2200 bit/s and 9600 bit/s using a satellite handset.

* Globalstar: A network covering most of the world's landmass using 44 active satellites; however many areas are left without coverage since a satellite must be in range of an earth station. Satellites fly in an inclined orbit of 52 degrees; as such, polar regions cannot be covered. The network went into limited commercial service at the end of 1999 .
* Iridium: A network operating 66 satellites in a polar orbit that claims coverage everywhere on the earth's surface. Commercial service started in November 1998 and fell into bankruptcy soon after. Notably radio cross-links are used between satellites in order to relay data to the nearest satellite with a connection to an earth station.

Tracking

LEO systems have the ability to track a mobile unit's location using doppler shift calculations from the satellite. However, this method can be inaccurate by tens of kilometers. On some Iridium hardware the coordinates can be extracted using AT commands, while recent Globalstar handsets will display them on the screen.[8]

The Google Wave API Hackathon in Mountain View is off to a good start with over 150 people from places as faraway as New Zealand and the Netherlands coding at the Googleplex.

Over the last seven weeks we've seen some early examples of how developers have used the Google Wave APIs, some of which are posted on the Google Wave Samples Gallery. The projects listed in the samples gallery also include source code, so they can serve as a good reference for you. To highlight a few, there's:

* Groupy-the-bot: A robot, written in Python, that enables users to create groups and manage their own subscriptions.

* Floodit Game: A competitive gadget game where users take turns capturing as many squares as possible.

* Waves in WordPress: A neat use of the embed API that makes it easy to put waves in a post or page on WordPress.

On the Google Wave team, we've also been hard at work improving the sandbox's stability and performance, as well as enhancing the APIs available: the UI and speed of gadget rendering, enabling cleaner gadget --> robot communication, and we've open sourced the Robots Java API.

For those developers out there looking to get started, as we blogged last week, we’ve already rolled out roughly 6,000 developer accounts and we’re working through an additional 20,000 requests over the course of the next month. If you haven't done so already, you’re welcome to request a sandbox account.

In other news: this morning we announced that we plan to start extending the Google Wave preview beyond developers on September 30th. This will take place on wave.google.com rather than the separate "sandbox" instance we are currently using, and we plan to involve about 100,000 users. In addition to the developers already using Wave, we will invite groups of users from the hundreds of thousands who offered to help report bugs when they signed up on wave.google.com.
